Weekend Wakeup: Metro track work and local parades

WASHINGTON – The weekend before Thanksgiving brings more Metro track work and roadwork.

Metro Track Work

Single-tracking will slow riders on the Red, Orange and Blue lines this weekend.

On the Red Line, there is work again between Dupont Circle and Van Ness stations. Trains will run every 16 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont, with extra trains during the day running between Farragut North and Silver Spring.

On the Blue and Orange lines, there will be track work between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory. Silver Line work will affect Orange Line trains between East Falls Church and West Falls Church. Both the Orange Line and Blue Line will run every 24 minutes.

As usual, the track work begins at 10 p.m. Friday, and continues through closing Sunday.

The Yellow and Green Lines have no track work scheduled this weekend.

Metro will run an extra hour of service Monday night from Morgan Boulevard for fans leaving the Redskins game at FedEx Field.

Silver Line Work Impacts Roads

Again this week, there are overnight lane closures on Interstate 66 east and west near the Dulles Connector Road.

Other work may close individual lanes on the Dulles Toll Road, Chain Bridge Road (Route 123), or Leesburg Pike (Route 7).

D.C. Streetcar Work

Eastbound H Street NE is scheduled to be blocked between North Capitol Street and 5th Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Crews are installing and testing power systems and other equipment related to the D.C. Streetcar line on the blocks behind Union Station.

The Metrobus stop at H and 4th streets NE will remain in service.

Maryland

Saturday, expect delays on Wisconsin Avenue in Friendship Heights. A private crane will be brought in between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The State Highway Administration says there could be one or two lanes closed in each direction between Willard Avenue and South Park Avenue, just a block north of the Friendship Heights Metro station.

In Silver Spring, SHA says up to two lanes will be blocked on Georgia Avenue between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday. Weather permitting, the closures stretch from Colesville Road (US 29) to 16th Street.

Saturday, the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade runs through Downtown Silver Spring beginning at 10 a.m. It goes from Ellsworth Drive to Silver Spring Avenue. Expect delays and several road closures in the area.

On Sunday morning, expect a single lane to be closed on Interstate 270 south just before Exit 11 for Montgomery Village Avenue and Quince Orchard Road. A bridge inspection is scheduled to last from 5:30 to 11:30 a.m.

And on I-95, a bridge inspection will close two southbound lanes at Old Gunpowder Road, just south of the Intercounty Connector, Sunday from 5 to 11:30 a.m.

From 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, two lanes might be closed in either direction on I-95 at the Baltimore/Howard County line. Crews are repairing the pavement on the bridge over the Patapsco River.

Also keep an eye out this weekend for overnight work on the Beltway in Prince George’s County. Repaving work continues on the Outer Loop between D’Arcy Road and Arena Drive.

There might also be overnight lane closures on New Hampshire Avenue at Sligo Creek Parkway.

D.C.

The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge is scheduled to be closed for testing between 4 and 9 a.m. Sunday.

DDOT says the South Capitol Street bridge will be reopened to traffic as soon as the swing span tests are complete.

Sunday night into Monday, the Anacostia Freeway will be fully closed. Weather permitting, all southbound lanes will be blocked between Pennsylvania Avenue SE and the 11th Street Bridge from midnight to 5 a.m. Monday morning. DDOT says the northbound lanes will be blocked for up to 20 minutes at a time.

Drivers headed south on D.C. Route 295 will instead have to exit onto Pennsylvania Avenue, and follow signs toward the ramp for westbound I-695/I-395/Southeast/Southwest Freeway or the ramp to southbound Interstate 295 at M Street.

Other Traffic Issues

Expect to see more traffic around local airports this weekend, and longer waits at security, as the Thanksgiving rush begins. Reagan National Airport says Friday is the first busy day of the holiday travel rush.

The Capitals play at home Friday night against the Canadiens, which could create more traffic Downtown.

Football playoff games and other high school events could also slow traffic in some spots. Loudoun County warns drivers to expect delays Friday night on Belmont Ridge Road and Claiborne Parkway because of Stonebridge’s matchup against Broad Run.

Thanksgiving Getaway

Lane closures will be lifted across the area beginning on Tuesday to ease the gridlock of the Thanksgiving getaway.

In Maryland, the SHA plans to suspend all non-emergency roadwork beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Work will resume at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2.

In Virginia, VDOT will suspend most lane closures between 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and noon Monday, Dec. 2.
