Woman to hand out letter, not candy, to obese trick-or-treaters

WASHINGTON — A woman in North Dakota is making headlines after announcing she will not give candy on Halloween night to overweight kids who ring her bell.

Instead, she’ll hand out a letter.

“You(r) child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season,” reads a line in the letter, which was posted on the the “Today” show’s website.

In the letter, the woman justifies her actions with the common phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

She says she is disappointed in her town of West Fargo, N.D., and her “hope is that you will step up as a parent and ration candy this Halloween and not allow your child to continue these unhealthy eating habits.”
