‘Green Eggs and Ham,’ ‘Duck Dynasty’ and Twitter: Ted Cruz’s time on the Senate floor

WASHINGTON – “Faith, family and facial hair” may be a rule to live by for A&E’s hit TV show, “Duck Dynasty,” but Sen. Ted Cruz said during his more than 15-hour filibuster that it is similar to his push to defund Obamacare.

“I want to point out to the junior senator from Utah: if we continue doing this long enough, we may have facial hair on the floor of the Senate. That’s all right,” Cruz said while rambling off quotes from the reality TV show.

Quotes from “Duck Dynasty” were part of the Cruz’s filibuster aiming to delay a must-pass spending bill and rally against Obamacare. After 6 a.m. Wednesday, Cruz and his allies had spoken for more than 15 1/2 hours, the sixth longest since precise record-keeping began in 1900.

Also during his time on the floor, he read Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” to his daughters back home in Texas.

“When Americans tried it, they discovered they did not like green eggs and ham and they did not like Obamacare either,” Cruz said. “They did not like Obamacare in a box, with a fox, in a house or with a mouse. It is not working.”

Cruz incorporated social media as he read off tweets using the hashtags “#MakeDCListen” and “#DefundObamacareBecause.”

One particular tweet summed up Obamacare in six words, Cruz said.

“Ain’t nobody go time for that.”
