WASHINGTON – Talk about a jumbo crab cake — Maryland’s Handy International, in Salisbury, broke the world record for baking the largest crab cake over Labor Day weekend.

The company had to top the current record it set in 2011 at 253 pounds. This time around, the crab cake chefs made a larger pan that weighed as much as the ingredients themselves, according to a news release. The pan had a 3-foot diameter, was 7.5- inches deep and 210 pounds. It was designed by Handy’s Regional Sales Manager Jim Cupp.

The chefs whipped up the ingredients for the cake, that took nine hours to cook, and debuted it at the Maryland State Fair Saturday. It officially broke the world record, weighing in at 301.5 pounds, says Carol Haltaman, senior vice president of the company.

The cake was on display for a few hours before it was made into more than 580 crab cake sandwiches. Proceeds from the sale of the sandwiches totalled $3,127 says Haltaman. The company donated it to the Maryland 4-H Foundation.

“I am excited in attempting to break the current record and raise funds to support the mission of the MD 4-H Foundation,” Cupp said at the fair. “What a way for the seafood community to join in helping to support the agricultural community for the State of Maryland!”

Haltaman says it’s nice for the company to participate in a fun activity that also helps the community. While Handy International might not attempt to break the record every year, Haltaman won’t count out another jumbo crab cake in the future.
