Mini golf coming to National Building Museum

WASHINGTON – Golf enthusiasts in Washington would not recommend friends tee off downtown, but that’s exactly what the National Building Museum hopes people do.

The museum staff has been known to use the museum’s Great Hall for fun, including for an indoor volleyball game, according to Chase Rynd, the museum’s executive director. So when it came to coming up with fun, family-friendly events to host this summer, Rynd’s staff got creative. Thus, the mini golf interactive exhibit was born.

Starting at 10 a.m. July 4, the museum will host the one-of-a-kind mini golf course designed by some of the region’s best architects. Local construction firms, urban planners and designers also took part in the design of the course.

Many of the firms formed teams with other building industry professionals to make their holes as dynamic as possible. To stir the teams’ competitive juices, the museum will present a Best in Show award determined by a jury of design experts, and players will vote for the People’s Choice award.

“We really don’t know what they will look like. We allowing a great deal of latitude in what they create,” says Rynd.

The golf course, designed for ages 4 and up, will feature famous buildings from across the world.

The interactive exhibit ends in early September and costs $5 to play. It is only $3 for members and those who pay for a full-price admission ticket on the same day. The National Building Museum is located at 401 F St. near the Gallery Place- Chinatown Metro.
