Man implants magnets into arm to avoid watch straps

WASHINGTON – Dave Hurban must really hate watch straps. Why else would he implant magnets into his arm to avoid them?

Hurban, from Williamstown, New Jersey, recently pierced four magnets into the topside of his wrist in order to attach his iPod Nano without the use of a strap. He calls the project iDermal, and says it’s not uncommon in body piercing.

“Those magnets are actually called micro-dermal anchors, and in body piercing they are very common. The tops are actually just 5 millimeter magnetic tops,” he tells Slashgear.

Hurban says he implanted the tops of the magnets into his arm, and secured the magnet bottoms onto the back of his iPod.

WARNING: This video contains graphic footage and may upset some viewers.

It wasn’t the “worst piercing” Hurban has ever done to himself, he says. And it’s worked as he’d hoped it would – the iPod stays in place while he’s jogging.

As for what he’ll do when Apple updates the Nano, Hurban says he’s not concerned.

“I did it because I’m living in the now.”
