AAA: DDOT got 175K broken meter reports last year

Tuesday - 8/27/2013, 6:44pm  ET

WASHINGTON - AAA Mid-Atlantic says drivers made more than 175,000 calls to the D.C. Department of Transportation last year to report broken parking meters.

The calls make up 82 percent of all service requests the agency received all year, but DDOT says at any given time 99 percent of D.C.'s 17,000 meters are working.

AAA says D.C. issued nearly 1.9 million parking tickets -- an average of 7.3 citations per minute -- and collected more than $92.5 million in parking ticket revenue.

The agency is moving away from old coin -operated meters. It has been installing boxes where parkers can get a ticket to place on their dashboards and using Park Mobile, which lets parkers pay for a spot over the phone or with a smartphone application.
