Gas price disparity grows between Va. and Md.

WASHINGTON – The states are neighbors, but gas prices in Maryland and Virginia are growing far apart from each other.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon regular, unleaded gas in Maryland is currently $3.56, while Virginia boasts a $3.36 a gallon average.

The 20-cent disparity follows radically different approaches to raising money for transportation projects.

Maryland lawmakers recently voted to hike the state’s gas tax, while the Virginia General Assembly eliminated it.

Analysts tell The Washington Times it is still too soon to judge how big a factor the legislation will play in driving prices one way or the other.

Since July 1, the average price in Maryland has jumped 11 cents.

Virginia’s average has remained steady.

As of Friday, Maryland ranks 23rd in the country for highest gas prices, and Virginia ranks 45th.
