New commuter lot opens in Northern Va.

GAINESVILLE, Va. – A new commuter lot is set to open, offering more options for Virginia commuters.

The lot in Gainesville opens Monday and will offer 433 parking spaces, along with access to Interstate 66 and bus service to the West Falls Church Metro station.

Drivers can access the lot by taking Cushing Road just off Balls Ford Road near the Prince William Parkway.

Access to I-66 eastbound is open from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. and is limited to buses and vehicles with two or more people because of the interstate’s HOV restrictions.

Virginia transportation officials hope the lot, which cost nearly $6 million, will encourage more commuters to leave their cars behind.

Direct bus service from the lot to the District is expected to become available this fall, adding another commuting option.

Other amenities at the lot include a bus loop, shelter, bike racks and lockers. A new sidewalk on the west side of Cushing Road will connect to the lot. The Virginia Department of Transportation also installed a new stoplight at the intersection of Balls Ford Road and Cushing Road.
