Fairfax Connector changes planned with Silver Line opening

WASHINGTON – The first part of Metro’s Silver Line is set to open later this year, and that means big changes for buses as well as on the rails.

Fairfax County will hold a series of meetings beginning Monday night asking for feedback on a revised plan for new bus schedules and routes once trains begin running from Wiehle-Reston East to East Falls Church.

The plan has already been revised based on feedback at earlier meetings.

The changes include the addition of a single Fairfax Connector route from Reston to the Pentagon and Crystal City to replace two routes slated to be shut down, as well as the rerouting of some new buses off of some smaller streets after neighbors raised concerns.

“We [also] looked at increasing the amount of service in the evenings and the midday,” says Fairfax County Transportation Director Tom Biesiadny.

The service changes impact the Tysons, Mclean, Vienna, Reston and Herndon areas as well as the Dulles corridor.

The proposal will be revised again after this round of public meetings, then submitted to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for approval in May.

The first phase of the Silver Line is scheduled to open at the end of 2013.

Trains will then run from the new Wiehle-Reston East Station to East Falls Church Station via Tysons Corner, then follow the Orange Line tracks to Stadium-Armory where Silver Line trains will take the Blue Line tracks to Largo.
