Metro considering ripping out carpet in train cars

Monday - 3/18/2013, 8:00am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro's top officials are thinking about ripping out the carpet in trains and replacing it with a speckled black hard surface.

Metro General Manager Richard Sarles says that despite periodic shampooing the carpet is often stained with gum and other gunk.

New train cars that are on order will have no-slip floors, not carpet. They will ultimately replace the oldest cars in the system, which have been running since it opened in 1976.
