Va. holding meetings on Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel

Thursday - 12/27/2012, 9:08am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Virginia transportation officials are set to hold public hearings to discuss alternative solutions for the Interstate 64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration are preparing an environmental impact statement as part of the study on area transportation needs.

Meetings are set for Jan. 23 in Norfolk and Jan. 24 in Hampton.

Officials say the transportation needs identified in this study are insufficient capacity to accommodate travel demand, as well as deficiencies of the existing roadway, tunnels and bridges. The study evaluates the impact on residential and business properties, parks, historic properties, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and economic considerations.
