New Hampshire Avenue construction begins Tuesday

An 18-month construction project to reconfigure New Hampshire Avenue begins this week.

New Hampshire Avenue will become a two-way street between Dupont Circle and Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom. The road is currently one-way.

The project will also improve crosswalks along New Hampshire plus update some of the pedestrian paths through Washington Circle. Sidewalks will be rebuilt along the length of the project, according to the District Department of Transportation.

New storm sewers and fire hydrants will also be installed along with improved street lighting, DDOT says.

During construction, at least one lane will remain open to traffic at all times. The construction will also restrict parking in the area.

Bus stops and Metro entrances are not scheduled to be affected.

Crews are set to begin work on the west side of the road beginning at H Street Tuesday.
