Bethesda street to close for apartment construction

Thursday - 8/30/2012, 6:39am  ET

WASHINGTON - Apartment and condominium construction in Bethesda, Md. will shut down a portion of Woodmont Avenue for almost two years, leaving residents with limited parking options.

Beginning next week, Woodmont between Bethesda and Miller avenues will close for 20 months. And nearby parking lots also will close during the construction.

The Washington Examiner reports that what was once a parking lot at the corner of Bethesda and Woodmont will be the future home of 162 apartments, 88 condos and about 40,000 square feet of retail space. The construction project is one of multiple in the works to add apartment buildings in the suburban community.

Residents worry whether the parking garages and local roads can handle the increased traffic once those buildings are occupied, the Examiner reports.

But WTOP's Adam Tuss reports that when the construction at Bethesda and Woodmont is complete, the amount of parking in the area will triple.

The nearby Capital Crescent trail will stay open during the project.
