WASHINGTON – A mega-conference on distracted driving with one goal in mind: Get drivers to pay full attention behind the wheel.

On Tuesday, safety advocates, auto-makers, law enforcement, government officials and others will come together at the headquarters of the National Transportation Safety Board, trying to figure out strategies and practices in the fight against distracted driving.

“It’s time to move from awareness to action,” says NTSB Chairperson Debbie Hersman in an online video, posted ahead of the conference.

“In generations past, the norm was an attentive driver, with occasional distractions. But today, distractions are competing full time for a driver’s attention,” she says.

The NTSB recently called for a nationwide ban on the use of all personal electronic devices while driving.

Four expert panels are scheduled to speak throughout the day.

The event will also be webcast through the NTSB website.
