Feds OK HOT Lanes funding, but not bike paths

WASHINGTON – High Occupancy Toll Lanes. Yes. Bike paths. No.

The U.S. Department of Transportation approved $20 million in federal funding to build HOT Lanes on Interstate 95 in Virginia.

The agency rejected a request for $29 million to pay for pedestrian and bicycle paths and walkways around Metro stations, The Examiner reports.

The HOT lanes project is a $940 million public-private partnership between Virginia and the company Fluor-Transurban.

Virginia Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton says it was critical to get the $20 million. The grant will let Fluor-Transurban leverage more federal loans.

The toll lanes will stretch between Edsall Road in Fairfax County and Garrisonville Road in Stafford County.
