GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Starting Tuesday, travel time between Gaithersburg and Laurel will be 30 minutes shorter, officials predict. The reason: The full Intercounty Connector opens at 6 a.m.

There was a ribbon-cutting Monday morning to mark the ceremonial opening of the next segment of the ICC, linking Interstate 370 and Interstate 95.

Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and other officials attended the ceremony.

The project is Maryland's first all-electronic toll road.

Commuters can "test drive" the ICC at no charge until Dec. 4. After that, E-ZPass will be required. Drivers who do not use E-ZPass will receive a bill by mail, for 150 percent of the original toll.

The toll for the full length of the 18-mile stretch will be $4.

One mile of road remains to be completed. Work is expected to begin on a stretch between I-95 and Route 1 early next year.
