WASHINGTON - Metro announced Thursday that all riders will be able to reload their SmarTrip cards online.
Riders can now log onto smartrip.wmata.com and add value with a credit card.
The program had been in a pilot phase, with around 150,000 riders testing the program before it was opened to the public Thursday.
After adding value to a card, customers must still tap a faregate or bus farebox to complete the transaction.
Future upgrades will include the ability for customers to automatically load value on their card when their balance drops below a specified amount, along with the ability to also add value to the MTA CharmCard.
