Friday - 8/19/2011, 6:26am  ET

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. (AP) - Prince George's County plans to begin operating its first speed camera within a half-mile of two schools in Fort Washington.

The schools, Issac J. Gourdine Middle School and Tayac Elementary School, are on Allentown Road. Police say the camera will begin operating Monday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and will cover both directions of travel.

Authorities say drivers will have a 30-day grace period before fines are imposed beginning Sept. 21. Under Maryland state law, the county will issue a fine of $40 for vehicles traveling 12 mph or more above the speed limit.

Lt. Tammy Sparkman, a police spokeswoman, says another eight cameras will be installed near county schools beginning Sept. 22.
