ELKRIDGE, Md. - Authorities are investigating a two-alarm fire that damaged a motel in Elkridge and closed Route 1 for hours.
Jackie Cutler, a spokeswoman for Howard County Fire and Rescue Services, says the fire broke out about 9 p.m. Monday on the second floor of the White Elk Motel on Washington Boulevard. Cutler says the motel was evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Cutler says the blaze appears to have damaged units at the front of the two-story building. She says about 60 firefighters from Howard and surrounding jurisdictions battled the blaze.
The White Elk has been in business since at least the 1950s. The motel is something of a landmark in the county with its illuminated sign picturing a white elk.
