Mike Murillo was bit by the radio bug at age 14, when he began his first part-time radio job at WMEL-AM in his hometown of Melbourne, Fla.
Starting out as a producer, Mike later became a news anchor, co-host of a late night variety show and the station's Chief Engineer before moving to Orlando to study at the University of Central Florida.
In 2004, while still in college, Mike started working as a news anchor and producer at AM 580 WDBO (Now News 96.5 FM) in Orlando. He joined the station weeks before four hurricanes hit the central Florida area. During and after the storms he found himself reporting from some of the hardest hit areas ... dodging dangling street lights and playing a dangerous game of hop scotch over downed power lines to file reports.
After graduating from UCF, Mike became a full-time producer and contributor for Central Florida's Morning News with Marconi award winning host Jim Turner. During his time in Orlando, he covered hurricanes, floods, numerous space shuttle missions, including the final flights, and the Casey Anthony Trial.
In 2011, he left the Florida sunshine to become a full-time street reporter for Merlin Media's WEMP in New York City, covering the Big Apple's New Year's Celebration, the Whitney Houston Funeral, Pandemonium in Times Square after a New York Giant's Superbowl win and ironically, the arrival of a space shuttle to a NYC museum.
In 2012, he moved to Merlin Media's talk station in Philadelphia, IQ 106.9 where he served as a news anchor and reporter for the station before coming to WTOP in September of 2013.
Radio runs in the family, Mike's sister Michelle Murillo is also a well known radio news anchor and worked along side Mike in New York and Philadelphia.
Outside of radio, Mike has a passion for music. He began playing the double bass and electric bass at a young age and has continued his hobby over the years, playing and singing professionally with many jazz, blues, rock and classical groups and orchestras.
He is always on the look out for a good jam session, too. So, if you know of one, let him know.
