Starbucks introduces beer-flavored coffee

WASHINGTON — Whether your preferred brew is coffee or beer, Starbucks may be able to satisfy your craving.

The coffee giant introduced a beer-flavored coffee at select stores in Ohio and Florida.

The “Dark Barrel Latte” does not have any alcohol in it, but it is made with espresso, topped with whipped cream and dark caramel drizzle and blends in a chocolaty stout-flavored sauce.

The new Starbucks beverage is part of the chain’s mission to test new flavors.

“Starbucks regularly tests new beverages, and testing is an essential part of bringing the Starbucks experience to our customers,” Starbucks spokeswoman Lisa Passe told USA TODAY .

The drink comes as the popularity of craft beer overflows.

Sam Oches, editor of QSRmagazine, a restaurant industry trade publication, says the drink may be Starbucks’ way to bridge the gap between beer and coffee drinkers.

“Craft beer fans love trying new things and love different flavor pairings,” Orches said to USA TODAY.

Starbucks hasn’t said yet if it plans to sell the latte in other parts of the country.

“We’re looking forward to learning more from the test,” Passe said to USA TODAY.
