D.C. regional airfares lower than a decade ago

WASHINGTON – For those who are still making travel plans for the summer, there is good news about booking a flight.

The average round-trip airfare out of any of Washington’s three main airports is less than it was 12 years ago.

The Sun Gazette quotes a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that says fares from Reagan National, BWI and Dulles are down 18.1 percent, in inflation-adjusted dollars, from where they were in 2000.

At Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, the average airfare was $318 at the end of 2012, down 13 percent from the start of the 2000s. At Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the average airfare was $370. At Washington Dulles International Airport, travelers paid the most, at around $493.

But if you want ultra-cheap flights, head up Interstate 95 to Atlantic City. That’s where the average ticket price was $157, the lowest in the nation.
