Stocks edge higher in early trading on Wall Street

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are edging higher in early trading on Wall Street, building on their gains from the day before.

Best Buy jumped 7 percent after its earnings came in well ahead of what investors were looking for. Dollar Tree rose 9 percent after reporting that its income rose nearly 4 percent in the latest quarter as shoppers spent more at its discount stores. And Limited Brands rose 3 percent after its own earnings beat expectations.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose three points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,891 in early trading Thursday.

Dow Jones industrial average increased 17 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,550. The Nasdaq composite gained 16 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,148.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was little changed at 2.54 percent.
