(AP) - IT'S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW: The culture of connections _ who do you know? _ at the heart of hiring practices in much of Europe is becoming ever more entrenched.

YOUTH AT A LOSS: With youth unemployment rising in Europe, the connections culture is blocking many talented young people from the few available jobs, or driving them overseas.

HURTING THE ECONOMY: Professors say nepotism and other forms of patronage can have a corrosive effect on economic growth, as qualified people are passed over for jobs.
