Lanier: Police to address violent Cap. Hill assaults ‘hard’

WASHINGTON – The recent robbery/beatings in Eastern Market are unusual in their violence, the chief of D.C. police said Thursday, and the department plans to bring the full measure of the law against the perpetrators.

D.C. police don’t have any further leads on the assault earlier this week of a 26-year-old man in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It follows the brutal beating of another man on Capitol Hill two weeks ago. Both incidents seem to have begun as robberies, but ended with unusual violence, says Chief Cathy Lanier.

These robberies are “disturbing” because the assault on the victims seems unnecessary, Lanier says, and not far apart from one another.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Lanier says of the recent police leads. So far, no vehicles have been identified with the most recent crime, as was the case with the first beating.

“When we catch the folks in these robberies, we’re going to go after these people hard,” she says.
