Grieving father crushed by daughter’s murder

WASHINGTON — Spending time at work, Lester Thompson is trying to keep his distance from his West Virginia home. He says, within those walls, there are too many memories of happier times with his daughter, who was happy and full of life.

“I was enjoying every moment I had with my daughter,” Thompson says. “It’s not going to happen again.”

Thompson is emotionally crushed after experiencing the unthinkable.

His 3-year old daughter, Kayla Thompson, was murdered at the hands of her mother, according to Prince George’s County police.

Sonya Spoon, 24, is charged with killing Thompson along with her other child, Ayden Spoon, who was only 1.

Investigators say Spoon put plastic bags over their heads inside her Cheverly, Maryland home on Sunday.

The children later died at a hospital.

“I will never see my daughter’s prom,” Thompson tells WTOP in an exclusive interview.

“I will never be able to walk her down the aisle.”

Over the past year, Thompson was involved in a custody battle with Spoon. Thompson tells WTOP, she would periodically cut off all contact with him.

He went to court, hoping to obtain specific guidelines for visiting his daughter, according to Thompson.

Court records from June show Spoon was granted primary custody.

Last week, according to police, Spoon was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

Just days later, she killed her toddlers, police say.

“I wish Maryland still had the death penalty, because she doesn’t deserve to walk on this earth,” says Thompson.

“She took the innocence from two little children.”
