The water main break happened on Rhode Island Avenue at Crittenden Street in Hyattsville at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The break caused a loss of about 6 million gallons and covered the road during the Thursday afternoon rush hour.
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said the break in the 12-inch main was contained at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
All but one southbound lane of Rhode Island Avenue will remain closed during Friday morning's rush hour while repairs are made to the 73-year-old pipe.
