Prince George’s police officer arrested after ‘road rage’ incident

WASHINGTON – A Prince George’s County police officer was arrested Tuesday for assaulting a motorist in what police are describing as a case of road rage.

Anne Arundel County police say that Prince George’s Corporal Joey Torres followed the motorist from Interstate 97 to a parking lot on Ordnance Road in Curtis Bay and then blocked the other driver’s car. Torres got out of the Chevrolet Equinox he was driving, got a gun out of his trunk and pointed it inside the other driver’s Volkswagen Passat.

A witness told police that Torres acted in an aggressive manner.

The other driver left the parking lot and called police.

Anne Arundel police say Torres, who was off duty at the time, never identified himself as a police officer to the Passat driver. Police say the gun Torres pointed was his service weapon.

Torres faces charges of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and using a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. Torres was later released on his own recognizance.

Torres, a 10-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department, has been suspended with pay pending an administrative investigation and hearing.

In a statement, Police Chief Mark Magaw said the department expects its officer to meet the highest standards whether on or off duty.
