Weekend breast cancer walk moved from National Mall

WASHINGTON – This weekend’s walk for breast cancer, originally scheduled to be on the National Mall, is moving to Six Flags in Maryland.

The American Cancer Society moved the walk citing the government shutdown as the reason they could no longer hold it on the National Mall.

Instead, the walk will be held 20 minutes outside Washington, D.C in Upper Marlboro, Md. at Six Flags America.

“We simply couldn’t allow the federal government shutdown and consequential closure of The National Mall to stop our event and the incredible progress we are making in the fight against breast cancer. We are grateful to Six Flags America that they came to our side in our hour of need to relocate our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk,” the organization says in a news release.

The walk is expected to draw about 2,000 walkers from the D.C. region.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. and ends 11 a.m. Walkers have the option to purchase a buy-one-get-one-free ticket to Six Flags.

Registration is still open online.
