Md. apartment fire kills 1 person, displaces 11 others

WASHINGTON – An apartment in Cheverly caught fire late Monday afternoon, killing one person and displacing people in three other apartments nearby.

Prince George’s police say firefighters responded to a 911 report of a smoke alarm sounding with smoke coming from a first-floor apartment on Landover Road.

They found and put out a relatively small fire in the apartment and found an unconscious woman. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

The County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross are helping seven adults and four children find temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The county’s homicide unit will help investigate until a cause has been determined.
