UPDATE: (8/6/2012, 3:16 p.m.) – A sad end to the story. The kittens were very young and refused to bottle feed, says Rodney Taylor, chief of Prince George’s County Animal Control. They had to be put down.

WASHINGTON (8/3/2012, 4:13 p.m.) – A pair of newborn kittens found three feet down a Beltsville sewer were rescued on Friday and are in good condition.

The kittens, estimated to be about two days old, were discovered in the drain by employees of a nearby business on the 12300 block of Baltimore Avenue, according to a news release. The employees, who could hear the kittens meowing, called Prince George’s County officials, who responded quickly.

“They’re a good weight and were crying a lot, which is a good sign,” says Mark Brady, spokesman for Prince George’s County. “They appear to be fine and in relatively good weight.”

Emergency personnel removed the kittens and turned them over to animal control, the news release says.
