Prince George’s County fights for FBI headquarters

WASHINGTON – The battle about where a new FBI headquarters should be built continues.

The bureau’s new site is a coveted prize, as it would bring thousands of jobs and new revenue to the chosen area. Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker says the decision is boiling down to a battle across the Beltway between Maryland and Virginia.

Baker believes his county, in Maryland, is the best location.

“We think that Prince George’s County makes all the sense. We have three sites that are great,” says Baker. “A lot of folks who work for federal agencies live in Prince George’s County.”

Baker thinks Greenbelt, Largo and Branch Avenue particularly would be ideal locations for the headquarters within the county.

“We think the Greenbelt site has the post potential, so we’re pushing very hard,” says Baker.

Baker highlights the Metro accessibility of the locations — something the federal government has said it wants.

The new headquarters would have as many as 11,000 workers and would cost about $1.2 billion. The project wouldn’t be completed until 2020.
