WASHINGTON, Pa. - A Maryland man charged with raping a southwestern Pennsylvania university student during an off-campus party has pleaded guilty to lesser crimes.
Twenty-six-year-old Harold Stanback Jr., of Capitol Heights, Md., pleaded guilty to open lewdness and harassment on Monday rather than face trial on rape and other charges.
Stanback was a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania when he was charged in December with raping an 18-year-old woman from California University of Pennsylvania, another state-owned school. Stanback is no longer enrolled at IUP.
Stanback was visiting a fraternity at California U. when the woman reported the rape. He had claimed the sex was consensual.
Stanback was immediately sentenced to one year on probation and fined $300 after Monday's guilty pleas before a Washington County judge.
