‘Guardians’ tops box office for the summer, year

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Guardians of the Galaxy” closed out the summer movie season with a first-place finish.

Marvel’s Disney-distributed space adventure — the top-grossing film of the year so far in North America — added another $22.9 million to its coffers over Labor Day weekend.

Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and the Warner Bros. tear-jerker “If I Stay” claimed the second and third spots, just as they did the weekend prior.

The new offerings, including the horror tale “As Above, So Below” and the thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, “The November Man,” debuted in fifth and sixth, place respectively.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Rentrak, are:
