Nelsons to debut as BSO music director this week

BOSTON (AP) — A new era begins this week for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Andris Nelsons is scheduled to make his debut as conductor and musical director on Sept. 27 in a sold-out concert at Symphony Hall.

The 35-year-old Nelsons is the 15th music director in the BSO’s history and the youngest in more than a century.

The Latvian-born Nelsons has been music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in England since 2008. He has made several previous appearances with the BSO, the first in 2011 and most recently as music director-designate in March.

Nelsons will lead the symphony in a total of 10 music programs during the 2014-2015 season. Three of those programs will also be performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall in April.

James Levine was the orchestra’s previous music director. He left in 2011.
