Musician recruits fans to contribute to his new album

WASHINGTON — Call it creative fundraising: Some fans of Mike Doughty, the former singer of Soul Coughing, are digging his idea to incorporate them into his new album.

Doughty is reaching out to fans to help support his new solo record, to be called “Stellar Motel,” by offering to make them part of the experience — for a price.

“At its best a pledge campaign is people feeling like they really joined a team and making this record with me is a cause,” Doughty says on his website.

To raise money for the new project, he’s offering to sell the guitars with which he’s recording the album, put on a private concert, list fan names in the credits, even type out the lyrics to one of his songs and sign it.

The donation options range from $18 to $20,000.
