WASHINGTON - "Working with a lot of bands is sort of like herding cats."
Local songwriter Derek Evry employs the well-worn one-liner to describe the process of organizing his latest project, "Music Still Happens Here," an eclectic CD compilation featuring 20 D.C. area bands.
This Sunday at the IOTA Club and Café in Arlington, Va., 16 of those bands will be on deck to celebrate the CD's release. The compilation clocks in at over an hour, and features everything from punk-pop to hip hop.
Evry got his start in the D.C. music scene more than 10 years ago, and has always been an avid follower of dozens of local acts over the years.
"There's always something happening. I've never had a day in the last decade where I wasn't invited to see a band or a songwriter perform."
After organizing numerous artists' showcases over the years, Evry now hopes that this CD release will help to expose some of his local favorites to a larger audience.
Utilizing social media and email blasts, Evry asked bands to submit their best songs. Once the lineup was finalized, each band contributed toward production costs. Evry used his own money for the finishing touches, including design and promotion.
"I'm not making money on this," he said, shunning the idea of profit being the primary goal of any artistic endeavor.
"It shouldn't be ‘How can I make money on this?' It should be ‘How can people learn what's happening around them and get involved,' and ultimately to listen to good music."
What's the next step for the project?
"It can really develop into anything," he says.
Future compilations might feature specific genres, such as all hip hop, metal, female singers,or jazz.
"As far as I'm concerned, it would be stupid to not keep this up," Evry says. "People need to know that there's music. And it's here."
"Music Still Happens Here" kicks off at 7 p.m. Sunday at the IOTA Club and Cafe.
Admission is $10 at the door.
