‘Downton Abbey’ fans can bid on visit of a lifetime

WASHINGTON — Fans of “Downton Abbey” may wonder what it would be like to live in the scenic castle where the popular British drama plays out.

If they have a stout bank account with plenty of quid, they can do just that.

Thursday is the last day for fans to win a trip to the famous home and get a taste of that lush world in person instead of just watching the show on the “telly”.

Since Aug. 4, Christie’s has been accepting bids for an overnight stay at Highclere Castle, where many scenes from the TV drama are filmed. The bidding started at nearly $17,000, and Christie’s estimates the bidding could go up to $25,000.

The winning bidder will be able to use three of the castle’s first-floor rooms for a night, including the one used for Lady Cora’s quarters on the show.

Bidding is also being accepted for other offerings, including cocktails and dinner for eight at the castle.

Money raised will go to various armed-forces charities. The castle, as loyal viewers of “Downton Abbey” know, was a military hospital during World War I.
