91 percent admit binge-watching, TiVo survey finds

WASHINGTON — For those of you who spend your rainy (and sometimes sunny) Sundays watching episode after episode of “Breaking Bad” or “House of Cards,” you are not alone.

The TiVo Spring 2014 Binge Viewing Survey surveyed 15,196 people and found 91 percent binge watched TV.

The survey defined binge watching as watching three episodes of the same program in a row.

Forty percent said they’d binged within a week of the April survey and 69 percent binged within a month of it.

A majority of those taking the survey say they needed the “catch up” on shows.

But 29 percent said they deliberately didn’t watch shows so they could do so all at once. TiVo Research expects that trend to continue.

With so many networks and so many shows on TV, the days of spending the summer catching up on the major networks’ fall shows during the summer are gone.

“It is now literally impossible for viewers to see all the shows they enjoy when they are first broadcast, and there’s no ‘summer break’ when viewers can catch up,” says TiVo Chief Research Officer Jonathan Steuer, in a news release.

Not surprisingly, the TiVO survey found 52 percent used TiVo as their source for binging. Netflix came second at 29 percent.

For watching entire seasons or more of shows, 46 percent used Netflix and 19 percent used TiVo.

When it comes to the most binge-watched shows, “Breaking Bad” takes the top slot, followed by “House of Cards” and “Game of Thrones.”
