Ex-NFL player Sharper surrenders in Los Angeles

Friday - 2/28/2014, 4:31pm  ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Former NFL All-Pro safety Darren Sharper is being held in a Los Angeles detention center after being named in a warrant involving a rape case in New Orleans.

Police say Sharper turned himself in last night.

He is also under investigation in sexual assault cases in Florida, Nevada and Arizona and has pleaded not guilty to rape charges in Los Angeles.

In a bail motion filed in the California case, a Los Angeles County investigator described a pattern in which the former football star met women at clubs or parties and lured them to a hotel room, where they were allegedly drugged and raped.

The motion says the incidents happened in the past five months, with two occurring within a day in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Sharper's lawyers have said they would prove that any sexual contact he engaged in was consensual.

If convicted in the California case, Sharper could face more than 30 years in prison.

Sharper played in the NFL from 1997 to 2010, primarily with the Green Bay Packers.
