Vienna woman among top 8 at Va. Beach race (PHOTOS)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - On a cloudy day with high humidity, three Northern Virginia and D.C. residents finished among the top 35 runners in the Rock n' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon Monday.

Matthew Lofton of Winchester, Va. finished the 13.1-mile race 31st among the 10,958 runners, with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes, 48 seconds. He ranked 24th among the 4,741 men in the race.

Alex Tworkowski, 22, of D.C. finished 32nd overall and 25th among the men. He had a time of 1:20:53.

Perry Shoemaker, 41, of Vienna, Va. came in 35th overall with a time of 1:22:21. She was the eighth of 6,217 women to cross the finish line and the top American woman to do so. She also was the top master runner, ranking first among the 827 women, ages 40 to 44, who participated.

Others from Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Baltimore cracked the top 100.

Columbia, Md. residents Craig Lebro, 26, and Conrad Orloff, 42, placed 36th and 38th with times of 1:22:23 and 1:22:44, respectively. Lebro was 28th among the men and Orloff, 30th.

Maurice Pointer, 56, of Baltimore came in 40th overall (1:22:50), and 32nd among the men.

Corey Lofton, 22, of Vienna, Va. placed 42nd overall (1:23:26) and 33rd among the men, followed by Jeremy Lynch, 32, of Falls Church, Va. (1:23:32). Thomas Johnson, 27, of Arlington, Va. came in 51st overall, running the race in 1:24:57.

Akintunde Morakinyo, 48, of Ellicott City, Md. was 58th overall (1:26:53).

Jillian Pollack, 23, of Arlington, Va. finished 62nd out of the 10,958 runners and 12th among the 6,217 women. Her time was time of 1:27:17.

Michael Proulx, 37, of Alexandria, Va. was the 66th person to complete the half marathon. He did so in 1:27:55, while Mario Zuniga of Front Royal had a time of 1:28:25 and was No. 68 across the finish line.

Centreville, Va.'s Scott McDonald, 33, came in 88th (1:31:31) , nearly 27 minutes after the first runner crossed the finish line.

The fastest man to run the half marathon -- Nicholas Kurgat, 33, of Kenya -- did so in 1:04:45, marking the 11th year a Kenyan won the race.

Running her first U.S. race, Rei Ohara, 21, of Japan, holds the distinction as the race's fastest woman. She ran the course in 1:13:38.
