PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Felix Hernandez is just a signature away from officially becoming the highest-paid pitcher in baseball. GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Pitcher Mat Latos (LAY'-tohs) has agreed to an $11.5 million, two-year contract with the Reds, avoiding what would have been baseball's first salary arbitration hearing of the year. Latos went 14-4 with a 3.48 ERA and two complete games in 33 starts last season while helping Cincinnati win the NL Central title.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana Pacers forward Danny Granger could make his season debut tonight against Charlotte after participating in his second full practice yesterday afternoon. Coach Frank Vogel told reporters that Granger looked a "little rusty" and that the Pacers were eager to finally get him back on the court. The Pacers have been waiting more than three months for their leading scorer the last five seasons to recover from patellar tendinosis in his left knee.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have fired general manager Scott Howson after nearly six years at the post. The Blue Jackets went 173-190-59 during Howson's reign and made their lone Stanley Cup playoff appearance after a franchise-best 41-31-10 mark in the 2008-09 season. They are 4-7-2 this year following Monday's 6-2 win over San Jose.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Wrestling's governing body says it's "greatly astonished" by the IOC executive board's decision to drop the sport from the Olympics in 2020. Past and present Olympic champions in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling are calling it "mind-boggling" and a "tragedy" for the sport. The move will also rob the U.S. of one of its most successful Olympic sports. The only sports in which the Americans have won more medals than wrestling are swimming and track and field.
