Port tops US Senior Women’s Amateur qualifying

DEAL, N.J. (AP) — Two-time defending champion Ellen Port shot a 2-under 71 on Sunday in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur to top the 64 match-play qualifiers.

The 52-year-old Port, from St. Louis, was the only player to break par in two rounds of qualifying at Hollywood Golf Club, finishing at 2-under 144. She has a record four U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur titles and captained the winning U.S. Curtis Cup team in June.

“This game doesn’t owe you anything. You have to work for everything you get,” Port said. “The score reflected the work and that doesn’t always happen.”

She had four straight birdies and five in a six-hole stretch.

“I negotiated the golf course well,” Port said. “I hit a lot of 5-woods off the tees, even though it would mean a longer approach shot.”

Canada’s Judith Kyrinis tied for second at 7 over with Caryn Wilson of Rancho Mirage, California; Andrea Kraus of Baltimore; and Brenda Pictor of Marietta, Georgia. Kyrinis had a 76, Wilson and Kraus shot 75, and Pictor had a 80.
