Navarro, Superal advance to US Girls’ Junior final

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Mexico’s Marijosse Navarro made a 40-foot birdie putt to beat Australia’s Shelly Shin on the 21st hole Friday in the U.S. Girls’ Junior semifinals at Forest Highlands.

“I was just trying to do my best and it went in,” the 17-year-old Navarro said. “It was too fast, but thank God it went in.”

She will face Princess Mary Superal of the Philippines in the 36-hole final Saturday.

Navarro beat Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, 1 up in the morning quarterfinals on the Meadow Course. A three-time Women’s Mexican Amateur champion, Navarro was sixth this year for Texas A&M in the NCAA tournament.

The 17-year-old Superal beat Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar, California, in 19 holes in the quarterfinals, and topped Cindy Ha of Demarest, New Jersey, 2 up in the semifinals.

“I feel very happy and surprised,” said Superal, the Kuala Lumpur Open winner this year. “I really didn’t expect anything. I just did my best.”
