Meyer, Anderson win US open water titles

CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) — Alex Meyer and Haley Anderson won the 5-kilometer titles Sunday on the final day of the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships at Castaic Lake.

Meyer, from Ithaca, New York, finished in 55 minutes, 34.30 seconds, edging Jordan Wilimovsky of Malibu and Joey Pedraza of Borward, Florida. Wilimovsky was second in 55:34.57, and Pedraza third in 55:35.00.

“I wanted to get out to a good start and stay close to the front,” said Meyer, a 2012 Olympian. “I drafted well throughout the race and was able to save a lot of energy for the final stretch.”

Anderson, from Granite Bay, won the event for the second time, finishing in 1:00:08.37. Tristin Baxter of Fresno was second in 1:00:09.59, followed by Eva Fabian of Keene, New Hampshire in 1:00:10.56.

“Coming around the last buoy, I was getting pinched in, so I went wide,” said Anderson, a 2012 Olympic silver medalist. “I wanted to be able to put my head down and just sprint into the finish.”
