New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show Montgomery County’s population continuing to grow, thanks in part to more growth in the baby boomer population.

The Census estimated the county had a total population of 1,016,677, according to its 2013 one-year American Community Survey study. That’s up from the 2012 estimate of 1,004,709. For the third year in a row, the percentage of 65 to 74 year-olds in the county increased.

Other interesting tidbits: Overall, poverty statistics aren’t significantly different from last year. The percentage of households with a mortgage paying more than 35 percent of their incomes on monthly ownership costs declined for the third straight year.

And for the first time, the Survey looked at computer ownership and internet use. According to the 2013 study, 93.7 percent of the more than 360,000 households in Montgomery County have at least one computer and 87.5 percent of the households have a broadband internet subscription.

The amount of people renting in the county remained steady, with 34 percent of occupied households renter-occupied. Those rents remained relatively high, with 53.9 percent of renters paying more than $1,500 a month and 34.8 percent paying between $1,000 and $1,499 a month. The median rent in the county was $1,562.

There were slight increases in the number of county residents with healthcare coverage, with 88.9 percent covered in 2013 — 23 percent were covered through public health insurance, up from 21.7 percent in 2012 and 20.5 percent in 2010.

A little more than 11 percent of the population had no healthcare coverage.
