After MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr called him out Tuesday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen has joined in on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a nod to a local politician who died from the disease.

Before dumping a cooler of ice water on himself, Van Hollen said he was making his donation to the ALS Association in memory of Betty Ann Krahnke, the three-term member of the Montgomery County Council who died in 2002.

Krahnke represented Bethesda and Chevy Chase as a Republican in the Council’s District 1 seat from 1990-2000. She first began to experience symptoms of ALS in 1998, stepped down from her Council seat in 2000 and became almost completely paralyzed as a result of the disease.

Van Hollen said Krahnke was a terrific member of the Council. He also challenged his son, Gov. Martin O’Malley, and Democratic attorney general nominee Brian Frosh.

Starr also challenged U.S. Labor Secretary and former County Councilmember Thomas Perez and County Executive Isiah Leggett.
