Montgomery’s International Flavor Comes To Bethesda

Bruce Adams, who runs the county’s Office of Community Partnerships and who founded the Bethesda Big Train, decided to mesh both organizations together in an International Night set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Shirley Povich Field (10600 Westlake Dr.)

The event will basically be a smaller version of the annual performance and food tasting festival that drew 8,000 people to Wheaton last fall. There will be $10 tickets for tasting a large selection of ethnic foods, a Chinese Lion Dance, mariachi band, tai chi demonstration and Ethiopian shoulder dancing.

Adams said Karla Silvestre, the former Latino Liason for county government, came up with the idea of expanding the World of Montgomery to other audiences. Adams’ Office of Community Partnerships is meant to “empower our ethnic communities.”

“We need to branch out and educate the broader public about the value of diversity,” Adams said. “So we thought, what could be a more standard, old-line Montgomery County group than the fans at the Big Train.”

The Fund for Montgomery, created by the county in 2011 to elicit private help in funding the event, is sponsoring the event.
