End of the line for Montgomery Village Golf Club

Wednesday - 5/28/2014, 4:17pm  ET

The warning came as long as a year ago. When Monument Realty LLC took over the Montgomery Village Golf Club in March 2013 it was candid that ultimately the course would make way for new homes.

And despite initial grumblings from neighbors about a lack of communication, developer and community members got on the same page earlier this year as the Montgomery Village Foundation, the homeowners' association representing the community of about 12,000 households in the neighborhood, gave its approval to a concept plan that would convert the 147-acre golf course into a mix of new apartments, townhouses, duplexes and single family homes.

Now the end looms, perhaps earlier than some had expected. The Montgomery Village Golf Club will be closing down for good on Nov. 30, The Gazette reports.

Monument Realty President Russell Hines said both the county's decision to complete a master plan for the area and falling membership rolls contributed to the closure, according to the Gazette.

The newspaper reports that the master plan process is expected to begin in October and run through June 2016.

Hines said that process will likely indefinitely lengthen the timeline for development and affect and change elements of the concept plan. “It creates a lot more uncertainty because you have to start over, start fresh,” he told the Gazette. “We’re looking at the whole community again. I’m hopeful that we end up in the same place.”

Monument says it will maintain the grounds after the course is shuttered.
